Course Description

Topics from probability and statistics to include permutations, combinations, and distribution. Prerequisite: 601 or permission of department head. Three semester hours.


Objectives

This course is intended for elementary and middle school teachers and will focus on
  1. Basic concepts of descriptive statistics, techniques of representing data, and distributions;

  2. Making predictions, elementary probability, sampling and modeling.

Course Outline
  • Descriptive statistics
    Data analysis and data representation using classical and contemporary approaches; descriptive statistics including topics concerning central tendency, dispersion, and relative position

  • Discrete topics
    Counting, permutations, and combinations;

  • Probability
    Experimental and theoretical probability including mutually exclusive and non-mutually exclusive events, multi-stage experiments, odds, expected value and simple conditional probability;

  • Simulation
    Using simulation to represent given probability situations;

  • Bivariate situations
    Strategies to determine "best-fit" models.
